Nicholas Tolosa is a contemporary artist capable of engaging his audience by
turning visual art into a universal language.
More than simple paintings, his visions in black and white (acrylic on canvas) are like snapshots of reality. Past and modern subjects are depicted in their dramatic elasticity with the same depth. Tolosa highlights his divorce from the facts he portrays through contrasting tones; indeed, he acts like a reporter, who denounces through his art his loss of faith in humanity.
The black background of some of his works acts like the darkness in a theatre, while the white light shines on the actor at the front of the stage. By contrast, other works present iconic dark images which stand out on a lighter background. This stylistic choice based on the rejection of colour alludes to the poetics of memory and is reminiscent of the shots of the early photographies.
Quoting Maupassant: "black words on a white page are the soul laid bare".
Tolosa is fond of classical ancient art and compares it to the everlasting nature of certain social issues, still present today.
Pompeii's bodies in the last instant of their lives and poor individuals are painted sharing in the same suffering, lying on the ground and without any hope. Both have seen their right to life denied, and both scream while being suffocated by destiny.
